The following page describes how MEB&T has evolved, and maps out how its founder has gained the experience and expertise he now enjoys.

Aberdeen

At Aberdeen University, Dr Al-Nakib gained an M.Sc. degree in Animal Production and a Ph.D. in Sheep Breeding. He mainly worked with Suffolk, North country Cheviot, Scottish half-bred sheep and the then newly developed breed of sheep, Cambridge, which was officially established in 1976.

Edinburgh

In 1984, Dr Al-Nakib returned from a 3-years teaching post at the University of Benghazi, Libya and Joined the Animal Breeding Liaison Unit at the Edinburgh School of Agriculture, UK.

At this stage, he was focusing on the subject of crossbreeding in sheep. He worked on the main British hill sheep breeds such as, Scottish Blackface (Stanhope and Lanark strains of the Scottish Blackface breed), North country Cheviot, Derbyshire Gritstone, Exmoor Horn and Swaledale breeds of hill sheep. This work was carried out in collaboration with the then, Animal Breeding Research Organisation (ABRO), Now, Roslin Research Institute, Edinburgh, UK.

He then moved to work with the Animal Production and Advisory Department (APAD) of the Edinburgh School of Agriculture, to develop a breeding plan (Selection Indexes) for British hill sheep....Continue...
