THE IMPERATIVE OF RESEARCH

It is axiomatic that one of the most important pre-requisites for success in any industry is that of research and development. The importance of scientific research lies in the fact that it methodiocally identifies the problem and draws a clear strategy with distinctive objectives for its solution.

Furthermore, scientific research is usually a very cost-effective method of using scarce resources for the purposes of grass-root development projects, in that it focuses these resources on the research (problem) area, then applies the resultant greater knowledge and fruits of success to the national industry at minimal marginal cost.

A fatal mistake in livestock research is to prematurely abandon and/or shift the emphasis in the objectives of an ongoing research programme in order to introduce another. The inevitable consequence of such actions is to perpetuate a sub-standard livestock productivity level. It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of genetic research, since it is only through the appropriate structuring of genetic improvement programmes would it become possible to produce cumulative and permanent changes.
